El filibusterismo josé rizal5/30/2023 A nationalist novel by an author who has been called "the first Filipino," its nature as a social document of the late-nineteenth-century Philippines is often emphasized. It was published in Ghent in 1891 and later translated into English, German, French, Japanese, Tagalog, Ilonggo, and other languages. Like its predecessor, the better-known Noli Me Tangere, the Fili was written in Castilian while Rizal was traveling and studying in Europe. The sea women book5/30/2023 Mi-ja marries Sangnum, a worker for the Japanese food stores, while Young-sook marries Jun-bu, a teacher. When Young-sook and Mi-ja return to Jeju Island, they see that the atmosphere has changed dramatically from the presence of war. While working in Vladistock, the girls save money and purchase presents for their future husbands. Throughout their developing friendship their island is occupied by the Japanese, and the situation worsens during World War II, at which time the young women decide to leave Jeju Island to do leaving home water work in Vladistock. The two girls learn to dive together and work side-by-side in the fields with Young-sook’s mother, Sun-sil, until, one day diving, Sun-sil drowns. The story flashes back and traces the beginnings of the friendship between Young-sook, who is the daughter of the leader of the Sut-dong diving collective, and Mi-ja, an orphan girl. When the woman shows Young-sook a picture of a young woman in a bathing costume, Young-sook denies knowing the woman, but she does in fact recognize her as her longtime best friend, Mi-ja, with whom she had a falling out decades earlier. The story begins in the present, when Young-sook, an old, retired haenyeo, is approached by a woman named Janet, and her daughter, Clara, on the beach. The Island of Sea Women is the story of the friendship of two haenyeo, Korean sea divers on Jeju Island. The following version of this book was used to create the guide: See, Lisa.

I am half sick of shadows book5/30/2023 The lady wears a red dress, in a room with Romanesque columns holding up the arches of the window reflected in the mirror. The painting shows the Lady of Shalott resting from her weaving. The scene is set shortly before an image of Lancelot appears in the mirror, enticing the Lady out of her tower to her death. In the painting, the mirror reveals a bridge over a river leading to the walls and towers of Camelot also visible nearby are a man and a woman, perhaps the "two young lovers lately wed" referred to in Tennyson's poem. This painting depicts an earlier point in the tale of the Lady of Shalott than those depicted by Waterhouse in his previous two works of 18 the Lady is still confined in her tower, weaving a tapestry, viewing the world outside only through the reflection in the large mirror in the background.

Summer Memories Only one man stands between her and the danger that lurks within-and only if he decides to keep her biggest secret hidden. As she wrestles with her true identity, the ruin, decay, and secrets she finds at the heart of the old mansion tear at her confidence and threaten to reveal her for who she really is. 52 Pickup by Elmore Leonard5/29/2023 Less dust, but no less dusky with the subject matter, which had its own murky sense of justice…and the distinct humor of this writer. His svelte prose was certainly honed out on the prairie with the taciturn folk on any side of Manifest Destiny, but many fans thought his true calling was with the colorful personas inhabiting the more cynical thrillers of present day crookedness. Leonard certainly had a way with it, too. No wonder it’s one of the most enduring and popular of film genres. Though now in the other genre he was equally renown for - the crime tale. A topic that continues to fascinate because we’re never at a loss for wrongdoing. As we did two years ago this month when we dusted off a classic western tale, the great and late- Elmore Leonard marks a return. Maybe it’s telling that our next entry in this year’s Duo Post series places one of my favorite authors back under this old book-film microscope of ours. We’re not exactly in the dog days of summer as yet, but the heat is certainly building up already.

Heartless by Anne Elisabeth Stengl5/29/2023 It’s like all the best old fairy stories, with deeper meaning under it all that can change how we see our own world.Īnd of course, I tried to create something like that in the Seventh World Trilogy too. I wanted to give away copies of Anne Elisabeth’s books because I love the world she created in Goldstone Wood. The series in question are Anne Elisabeth Stengl’s TALES OF GOLDSTONE WOOD (8 novels and a novella) and my own SEVENTH WORLD TRILOGY (by Rachel Starr Thomson, if you don’t know whose blog you’re on … yeah, I know, that happens in this weird world we call the Internet.) If you haven’t heard yet, I’m running a giveaway this month that features a brand-new Kindle Fire and two full series, in paperback. They inform our thinking.Īnd they still inspire us, somehow, to live more fully and seek more meaning in our own worlds. Lewis, George MacDonald, J.R.R Tolkien … their names are legendary because they didn’t just give us stories that inspired us, they gave us worlds to wander.

Seneca the younger works5/29/2023 Seneca was a figure who transcended the shift from pagan to Christian Europe. Rubens was among the many who were dazzled by it and it inspired him to paint his own version of the scene. It was claimed straight away that this was an image of the dying Seneca, the name by which the work came to be known. Carved from shimmering black stone, it appeared to show an elderly man, grimacing with pain, the veins of his limbs bulging. In the 16th century a classical marble statue was unearthed in Rome, which is now on display in the Louvre. There is, however, far more to Rubens’ widely imitated masterpiece of 1614 than meets the eye: the origins of this visual image of Seneca’s suicide trace a tortuous path. It is a dramatic episode, recounted by Tacitus in his Annals. The veins of his arms, wrists and legs were opened and he stepped into the warm water, eventually bleeding to death. As befits a senior Roman figure, he had been ‘invited’ to take his own life. Though retired from public life, the Spanish-born ‘Roman Socrates’ had been implicated in the Pisonian Conspiracy of AD 65 against his former pupil. Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Roman philosopher, orator, politician and tutor to the Emperor Nero, stands in a bowl of warm water, preparing for death. |
